Happy Fall, Y’all!

Autumn has come, and our trees are so pretty! We’re finishing up our first year with the trees! Although summer was hard, we learned a lot. Now we know how to trim peach trees, how to tell different kinds of peaches apart, and we can work together as a family much better.

What’s something that we celebrate during November? That’s right, Thanksgiving! The pilgrims gave thanks for their plentiful harvest on Thanksgiving, and we plan on doing the same! They had a huge party with lots of food. Today, people eat a lot of food on Thanksgiving-including turkey!

The story of the pilgrims’ Thanksgiving, better known as the first Thanksgiving, starts in England. In England, the pilgrims’ rights were not protected. They moved to Holland, were they then were able to start businesses and go to church regularly. The pilgrims had everything they needed, but when they received news of the New World, they began to feel that God was telling them to go. They counseled together and decided to follow the prompting. The pilgrims found an old, beat-up boat- the Mayflower– to use for their journey to America and left everything behind.

They arrived to a cold autumn that was turning into a freezing winter. They had trouble finding food and shelter. Many of them died. They eventually found a place to build houses. Later on, an Indian named Squanto taught them how to grow food. When the harvest came in the fall, they had lots of food. They through a giant party with their Indian friends. That is what became know as the first Thanksgiving.

It, however, wasn’t actually the first Thanksgiving ever. The pilgrims had gotten the idea from the Bible, and, wanting to follow God, they decided to celebrate the harvest. Thanksgiving was about counting your blessings, including the harvest-and still is!

Our family is looking forward to giving thanks and celebrating the holiday. We got lots of fruit and vegetables from our trees and garden this year, and we plan on celebrating that the same way the pilgrims did, with lots of food and some friends! Happy Thanksgiving!
